He was born to Ole and Susie (Benson) Shaw Hawkinson on July 9, 1931 in Gratiot, WI. Henry grew up on a farm outside of Gratiot where he attended a rural country school. She was united in marriage to Robert Byron “Bob” Smiley. Erna worked for an insurance company in Iowa.
