Peoria, IL – Herbert Lyle Cathman, age 84 of Peoria, IL and formerly of Lancaster, WI passed away unexpectedly on Sunday Feb. 10, 2013 at his residence in Peoria. Herbert was born on July 17, 1928 in Bagley, WI the son of William and Birdie (Bohringer) Cathman. He married Violet Shy on May 12, 1954 in Prairie du Chien, WI.
Herbert enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1952 and proudly served his country in the Korean War until 1954. After being honorably discharged he returned to the Lancaster area and married the love of his life, Violet. He and Violet rented several farms in Grant, Crawford and Iowa County before purchasing a farm outside of Lancaster in 1968. In addition to farming, Herbert worked at Foremost Farms cheese factory in Lancaster from 1975 until his retirement in 1994. In 2009, Herbert left the farm and moved to Peoria, IL where he resided with his son Duane. Herbert greatly enjoyed the people he met in Peoria and enjoyed watching the traffic at the local airport and the ever-changing garden from his bedroom window. He also enjoyed farm auctions, old John Deere tractors and machinery, and collecting toy tractors. Herbert’s lovable sense of humor and infectious smile will always be remembered.
Herbert is survived by his three children; Kenneth (Lori) Cathman of Lancaster, Duane Cathman of Peoria, IL, and Karen Lamb of Menasha, four grandchildren; Kimberly (Chris) Sindahl, Sarah Lamb, and Dustin and Nichole Cathman, great-grandson, Hunter Sindahl, siblings; Willis Cathman of Lancaster, twin brother Herman Cathman of Lancaster, Madonna (Bill) Rieckens of Bellevue, IA, Rozella (Russell) Kramer of Blue Grass, IA, and sister-in-laws; Betty Cathman of Fennimore and Darlene Cathman of Lancaster.
Herbert was preceded in death by his parents, wife Violet, infant daughter Carol Marlene Cathman, grandson Greg Cathman, four brothers; Burdette, Bernard, Louis (Thelma), and Berlyn, and sister Retha (Christian) Schnitzler.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday Feb. 14, 2013 at the Larson Family Funeral Home in Fennimore. Burial with military honors will follow in the Homer Cemetery, Hickory Grove Township, Grant Co., WI. Friends and family may call from 9:00 A.M. until the time of service at the Funeral Home on Thursday morning.
