Fennimore – Lela M. Wood, age 89 of Fennimore died on Friday Jan. 18, 2013 at the Fennimore Good Samaritan Society. Lela was born on March 25, 1923 in Mt. Hope, WI the daughter of Harley and Myrtle (Ferguson) Welsh. She married Arden Wood on March 9, 1945 in Altus, Oklahoma.
Lela was a devoted wife and mother who spent her life caring for her family with everlasting love and compassion. Her home was always open and welcoming for family and friends to gather for a meal or one of her famous pies made from fresh picked berries. Lela enjoyed playing cards, golfing, fishing, and making various crafts for family and friends. She also adored her grandchildren and looked forward to attending their various activities. During later years Lela and Arden enjoyed new friendships and warm weather while wintering in Lake Havasu City, AZ. Lela will always be remembered for her love of family, commitment to community, and special sense of humor. She will be greatly missed.
Lela is survived by her four sons; Dennis Wood of Providence, RI, Robert (Patricia) Wood of Madison, Ronald (Joanne) Wood of Sheboygan, and William (Brenda) Wood of Fennimore, six grandchildren; Miranda (Jamie) Bush of Oregon, WI, Jesse (Tara) Wood of Fennimore, Dylan (Courtney) Wood of Deforest, Benjamin (Trish) Wood of Dodgeville, Bryan Wood of Prairie du Chien, and Scott Wood of Sheboygan, and 10 great-grandchildren.
Lela was preceded in death by her parents, husband Arden on Oct. 6, 1996, and siblings; Frank (Vivian) Welsh, Georgia (Lennie) Francis, Velma (Lee) Cliff, Jack (Martha) Welsh, L.G. (Joy) Welsh, and twin sister Lola (John) Pagel, and a great-granddaughter Cambry Wood.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday Jan. 22, 2013 at the Fennimore United Methodist Church in Fennimore with burial to follow in the Prairie Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8:00 P.M. on Monday evening Jan. 21, 2013 at the Larson Family Funeral Home in Fennimore and from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service at the Church on Tuesday morning. In lieu of plants and flowers, memorials may be given to the Fennimore Area Foundation at P.O. Box 134 Fennimore, WI 53809 in loving memory of Lela M. Wood.
