John A. Kreul

Montfort – John A. Kreul, age 89, passed away on Tuesday morning, May 1, 2018, at Bloomfield Manor in rural Dodgeville. John was born on Dec. 6, 1928 at home in Highland Township, the son of Anton and Mary (Kroll) Kreul. On November 22, 1952, John married the love of his life, Fern Frederickson at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Highland.

John earned a degree in teaching from the Platteville Normal School and taught at one room schools in the Highland area in addition to working nights at the Torque Gas Station. When the rural schools closed in 1960, John began farming and working at Fillback Ford as the bookkeeper and parts man until retiring in 1981. Being a hard worker, John couldn’t sit still for long. During retirement, he worked at Carquest in Fennimore and later ran his own auto repair shop on Castle Rock Ridge. During the summer, John and Fern also loved mowing area cemeteries and local businesses together. He enjoyed going out to eat and playing cards and looked forward to the kids coming over and always insisted they stay for supper. John was a devoted husband, loving and caring father, and one heck of a grandpa.

John is survived by four children; Theresa (Harold) Pink of Highland, John (Kathy) Kreul of Highland, Peggy Johnson (Mike Kohl) of Montfort, and Jim (Chris) Kreul of Reedsburg, 10 grandchildren; Alicia (Mitchell) Ziolkowski, Michael Grainger, Tim Kreul, Amy (Mike) Murphy, Emily (Kevin) Brogley, Sara and Jenny Grainger, Becky Pink, Alex and Mariah Kreul, four great grandchildren; Elliza, Nallia, Evan and Owen, and sister Rosemary Brennan of Madison.
