Betty J. Hirsch

MCFARLAND – Betty J. Hirsch, age 96, left this world on Wednesday December 17, 2025.

Betty was born at home in rural Fennimore on July 27, 1929, the daughter of Henry and Agnes (Olson) Everson. She attended Castle Rock Grade School and Montfort High School, graduating in 1947. Following graduation, she was employed by a local business in Fennimore.

On July 7, 1952, Betty was united in marriage to Wilbur “Bill” Hirsch at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They enjoyed 56 years together before his passing in 2008. Betty and Bill lived in Madison from 1952 until 1974, when they moved to McFarland.

Betty worked in the office at Red Dot Foods and later at General Telephone, retiring in 1989. She was a member of McFarland Lutheran Church and enjoyed weekly gatherings with the ladies quilting group.

Although the death of her son Jim, age 51, brought much sadness to Betty’s life, she continued to be a source of joy and support to those around her. She looked forward to afternoon Scrabble games with her son, Mike.

Betty is survived by her son, Michael (Jaclyn) Hirsch; daughter, Karen (Jonathan) Knoll; sister-in-law, Helen Everson; along with many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wilbur in 2008; her son, Jim in 2012; her brother Marvin, in 2020; and many sisters and brothers-in-law.

Betty’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to her care team at Agrace Hospice. The support, kindness, and compassion they showed to not only Betty, but the entire family, is deeply appreciated
