Leo B. Stelpflug

Leo Stelpflug, 98, Lifelong Farmer and Devoted Family Man, Dies Peacefully.

LANCASTER - Leo B. Stelpflug, age 98, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family on Saturday morning October 18, 2025, at his residence. A devoted husband, father, veteran, and friend, Leo lived a full and rich life rooted in love, hard work, and deep connection to others.

Leo was born on May 10, 1927, in Potosi, WI the son of Bernard and Margaret (Siepker) Stelpflug. Leo spent his life working the land as a dedicated farmer, embodying the values of perseverance, gratitude, and humility. He proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict, spending two years in service before returning home to begin the next chapter of his life.

On February 1, 1955, Leo married the love of his life, Betty Weires. Together they shared an extraordinary 70-year marriage, marked by devotion, laughter, and unwavering support. Together they raised nine children, whom Leo loved fiercely and unconditionally. His family was his greatest pride and joy. Leo had a sharp wit and a warm smile that could brighten any room. His sense of humor was ever-present, and he approached life with a deep sense of optimism. Even in the face of challenges, he found joy and light, a gift he shared freely with those around him.

After retiring from farming, Leo continued to stay active and engaged with his community. He drove a cheese truck for Sherman’s and later found great joy in transporting Mennonite friends to various functions and events, forming lasting friendships along the way. For 15 cherished winters, Leo and Betty escaped the cold to enjoy the sunshine and camaraderie of Florida, where they met many dear friends. Leo was a proud member of the Lancaster VFW, always honoring his fellow veterans and maintaining close bonds with those who shared in his service. He was also an active member of the St. Clement Catholic Church and served as past President of the Farmers Union Co-op.

Above all, Leo loved life. His heart was full because of the countless relationships he nurtured over the years — with family, friends, neighbors, and even strangers who soon became friends. He believed in people, and people loved him in return. In his final years, Leo was cared for by his beloved wife, Betty, with extraordinary devotion, compassion, and love. Their bond was a beautiful testament to a life well-lived together.

Leo leaves behind a legacy of laughter, kindness, and connection — and a family who will forever hold his memory in their hearts. He will be deeply missed.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Saint Croix Hospice for their wonderful care. In lieu of plants, and flowers a memorial fund is being established and distributed to various organizations that were dear to Leo and his family.

Leo is survived by his wife Betty, nine children: Karen Hudek, Dan “Ladder” (Denise) Stelpflug, Tom Stelpflug, Kathy (Doug) McArthur, Susan (Eric) Trapp, Sandra (Terry) Downs, Tim Stelpflug, Lisa (Tony) Leis, Terry (Amy) Stelpflug, 26 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren and along with many special nieces and nephews.

Leo was preceded in death by his parents, son-in-law-Daniel Hudek, two grandchildren Tyler and Maggie McArthur, siblings, Cyril (Mary Ellen) Stelpflug, Cletus (Eileen) Stelpflug, Jeanette (Gene) Johnson, Harold (Marie) Stelpflug, and Robert (Joanne) Stelpflug.
