Aubrey L. Blackburn, age 96, of Fennimore passed away on Thursday April 27, 2023, at Divine Rehabilitation and Nursing in Fennimore. He was born on July 11, 1926, in Fennimore the son of Jesse and Grace (Brookens) Blackburn. Aubrey was united in marriage to Gwendolyn Monroe on June 28, 1948, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA.
Aubrey grew up working on the family farm near Mt. Hope. As a youth he would try to slip away to the Bloomington Bridge where he caught bullfrogs and sold them to the local restaurant that offered frog legs on the menu. Aubrey and Gwen farmed and raised their family in rural Mt. Hope until 1971 and then moved to Fennimore. They then started Blackburn Universal Dairy Equipment Sales and later expanded by operating the Blackburn U-Fill in Fennimore. Because of his farming background, he also taught classes at the Southwest Technical College regarding farm and dairy equipment installation for three years until retiring. He and Gwen enjoyed camping, he loved cooking over the open fire, wintering in Texas, and playing cards.
Aubrey was dedicated to his family and always wanted to lend a helping hand, especially around the farm. In his later years, he especially enjoyed long phone conversations with friends and family.
Aubrey is survived by his five children: Melody Govier of Fenimore, Nancy (John) Govier of Tucson, AZ, Christine (Roger) Butler of Boscobel, Dave (Christy) Blackburn of Fennimore, Jim (Lou Ann) Blackburn of Belmont, 12 Grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and brother Jerry (Cele) Blackburn of Verona.
