BOSCOBEL – Robert “Bob” P. Childs, age 88, passed away on Saturday January 18, 2025, at his home that he moved and renovated, surrounded by his family. Bob was born on May 12, 1936, the son of Seth and Lela Childs. He was united in marriage to Gale Miller on August 18, 1955, in Dubuque, IA.
In his earlier years, Bob embraced the demanding work as a farmer. He was eventually employed with Design Homes in Prairie, moving homes for them. He also worked for a time with Harold Turner Construction and owned his own salvage yard. Bob served as a Deputy under his brother, Sherriff Ray Childs for Crawford County Wisconsin for a couple of years and as Chief of Police for Wauzeka WI.
Eventually Bob followed in the footsteps of his family before him and started his home moving business, Childs Contract Movers, making it a successful business for five generations. Bob’s love for moving and constructing homes was evident in his commitment as secretary and treasurer for Wisconsin Movers Association, his active involvement with Midstate House Movers association, and membership with the International Association of Structural Movers.
Among his many accomplishments, Bob was particularly proud of his work during the Prairie du Chien and Gays Mills floods, where he assisted in moving homes to safety. He was also recognized for his work in the Chicago area where he completed his largest moving job to date; a one-million-pound building. He loved to be challenged. In his later years, Bob enjoyed repairing and restoring barns.
Bob and Gale have attended the Assembly of God Church in Boscobel for over sixty years. He helped construct a new church in 1973. Bob enjoyed attending house mover conventions and meeting new people. He loved Mack trucks and a good cup of coffee. He could often be found enjoying a hot cup of coffee with family or friends at Unique Café in Boscobel. He would always say “I only drink coffee when I’m alone or with somebody.” As a devoted husband, father, and friend, Bob was always willing to lend a helping hand or his sons. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was always ready to share a hug with the ones he loved.
Bob is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years, Gale; eight children: Dennis (Lori) Childs, Russell (Nola) Childs, Randall (Beth) Childs, Daniel (Jodi) Childs, Rick Childs, Deborah (Samuel) Childs, Kathryn (Dale) Lozier, John (Susan) Childs; special nephew, Rich (Michelle) Bender; 22 grandchildren, 55 great grandchildren; two great great grandchildren; sister in-law, Lola Childs; as well as many other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Raymond Childs, Shirley Childs, and Sharon (Lloyd) Bender; and granddaughter, Chelsey Childs.
