DARLINGTON – Myrtle Gail Friesen (Gail), age 86, of Fennimore (more recently Darlington), Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026. Gail was born on August 31, 1939, in Morden, Manitoba, Canada, to Donald Ross and Verna (Monaghan) McNaughton. Gail attended school in Morden and after graduation, she moved to Winnipeg for secretarial school. Gail was an avid teenage athlete during high school where she was the catcher for the Morden Whiz-Bangs, traveling the country with her team.
On June 21, 1958, Gail married Bernhard Alvin Friesen (Doc). The couple moved to Kansas where Doc attended Kansas State University. After his graduation in 1966, they moved to Fennimore where he began his veterinarian career and where they made their home and raised their three children, Rick, Rob and Renee.
Gail loved bowling and golf, achieving numerous awards in both. She is best known for her paintings and her crafts, traveling to numerous craft shows throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota. Gail and her good friend, Jeannie Frey, owned a retail craft store, Conetree Gifts and Crafts in Fennimore for many years. Gail and Bernie enjoyed over 20 years of wintering in Florida, escaping Wisconsin's cold weather and making countless friends with other snowbirds.
Gail will be remembered for her love of watching her grandchildren in their many sports activities. She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and enjoyed volunteering at the Fennimore Toy & Doll Museum and the Fennimore Railroad Museum. She cherished spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed reading, golfing, playing cards with friends, and going on all-day shopping trips and excursions with her dear friend, Donna Brugger. She also loved relaxing with her daily glass of Baileys and never missed an opportunity to visit and laugh with those she loved.
