Rewey, WI - Lawrence J. Schurz, age 89, died on Saturday afternoon Dec. 27, 2014 at his residence in Rewey. Lawrence was born on Jan. 9, 1925 in Prairie du Chien, WI the son of Roy and Nettie (Weighner) Schurz. He was united in marriage to Claris Meyer on Sept. 25, 1946.
Lawrence was enlisted in the U.S. Marines from March 10, 1943 until being honorably discharged on Jan. 20, 1946. He served during WWII as a proud Marine of the “War Dog Platoon”. Lawrence’s love for dogs, especially Doberman Pinschers, continued throughout his life. Lawrence was engaged in farming his whole life. He farmed with his uncle for a few years until buying his farm in Rewey in 1960. He continued dairy farming with registered Holsteins until selling the cows in 1988. Lawrence had a great love for music and table tennis. He especially enjoyed taking the grandchildren out to shoot guns in the quarry, and a good 4th of July celebration. Lawrence was a member of the VFW, the Holstein Friesian Association. He will truly be remembered for his dedication to his family, his country, and his wonderful sense humor.
Lawrence is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Claris of Rewey, four children; Guy (Cheree) Schurz of Spencer, IA, Carol Vazquez of Gulfport, FL, Jane Schurz of Huntington, IN, Julie Schurz of Waupun, WI, three grandchildren; Brian (Laura) Schurz of Carlisle, IA, Aaron Schurz of Spencer, IA, Jason Orton of Griffith, IN, three great grandchildren; Hannah, Meghan, and Rebekah Schurz.
Lawrence was preceded in death by his parents, two sons; Carl and John Schurz and a grandson; Jeremiah Burns
Visitaton for family and friends will be held from 3-7:00 P.M. on Friday Jan. 2, 2015 at the Soman-Larson Funeral Home in Montfort. Burial will be held at 1:00 P.M. on Saturday Jan. 3, 2015 at Mifflin Cemetery with Military Honors to be accorded by the Montfort VFW. In lieu of plants and flowers a memorial fund is being established in living memory of Lawrence J. Schurz.
