James D. Christiansen, age 79, of Montfort passed away on Saturday March 21, 2020 at UW Hospital in Madison surrounded by his beloved family. He was born on May 4, 1940 in Dodgeville the son of Raymond and Clarice (Johns) Christiansen. James was united in marriage to Margaret Vesperman on May 26, 1962 at the Lancaster Presbyterian Church.
James graduated from Montfort High School in 1958. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1958 and earned the rank of Sergeant while serving in Germany. He proudly served his country and was honorable discharged in 1962 and returned home. Following his marriage to Margaret, Jim spent his early years as a carpenter working with his father at Eastman Cartwright, quickly moving on to build homes. For over 50 years, Jim designed and built homes and businesses throughout southwestern Wisconsin, including Madison. He was an extremely creative person. Often seeing a finished product even before it was built. Mid-way through his career Jim with a few friends, built Tower Junction Bowling Alley and Restaurant. He loved collecting antiques and vintage signage with Margaret. It was a passion. Jim also loved sports, especially NASCAR, which was evident in his many travels to races. Not far from his love of stock car racing, was his love for the Packers, Brewers, and Badgers. Outside of sports, Jim loved travel and food. His favorite places to visit included Las Vegas, Napa Valley, and Gulf Shores later in life. When getting away for weekends, Jim loved his time in Wyalusing where he and Margaret had a cabin for many years.Many weekends were spent there with family and friends. He was a never-ending dreamer and practical joker who never lost his sense of humor.
James is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years Margaret of Montfort, three children; Kelly (Doug) Kamps of Platteville, Kathy (Brian) Moen of Fennimore, Todd (Mary Bridget) Christiansen of Spring Green, seven grandchildren; Karlee and Makenzie Kamps, Amber, Ari, Bryce (Ashley), and Ashlyn Moen, Spencer Christiansen, three great granddaughters; Rozilyn, Lilly and Leonora, two brothers; Gerald (Pat) Christiansen and Jeff (Jane) Christiansen both of Montfort, and brother-in-law Doug Vesperman of Prairie du Chien.
James was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Clarice Christiansen, father and mother-in-law Ralph and Evelyn Vesperman and sister-in-law Becky Vesperman.
There will be no memorial services held at this time but a Celebration of James’s Life will be held at a later date. A memorial fund is being established in loving memory of James D. Christiansen. At this time, condolences and cards may be sent to 304 West Main St. Montfort, WI 53569.
