FENNIMORE – Donald L. Weist, age 81, passed away on Friday February 14, 2025, surrounded by his family, at Dove Healthcare – Fennimore. Born on September 25, 1943, Donnie was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
Throughout his childhood, Donnie moved frequently but found his home in Fennimore in 1962, where he resided in the same home, until August 2023 when he transitioned to Dove Healthcare. While he struggled greatly with this change, the warmth and humor from the staff made his stay more comfortable.
Donnie began his career at Stout’s Grocery Store and dedicated 37 years to Kowalski-Kieler – Fennimore. He took pride in his work, often pointing out places where he poured cement during drives around the tri-state area. Known for his special sense of humor, he never missed a Green Bay Packers game and in his later years began cheering for the Kansas City Chiefs.
In his free time, Donnie found joy in watching birds and squirrels and was well-known for his many concrete lawn ornaments. He married Mary Lou Kirschbaum on August 25, 1961, at the Grant County Courthouse and again on August 25, 1962, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Fennimore.
Donnie is survived by four children: Corie (Dana) Furuseth, Brad Weist, Kevin Weist, and Robin (Paul) Bishop; four grandchildren: Phillip (Julie) Hefel, Lindsay Weist, Brandon (Felicia) Meiners, and Cortney (Kyle) Kirk; granddaughter in law, Jessica Weist;16 great grandchildren; and siblings: Charles Weist, Judy Ormson, Linda Spiehs, and Colleen Frazier. He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Marie (Wilcox) Wiest; infant son, Donald Louis; grandson, Nicholas Weist; son in-law, Brian Meiners; and siblings: Larry Weist, MaryAnn Weist, Lyle Wiest, Kate Glasbrenner, Shirley Glasbrenner, Roger Wiest, and Richard Weist.
The family would like to thank Dove Healthcare for their care over the last year and a half. So many wonderful stories have been shared from the staff members. They also wish to extend a heartfelt thank you to Agrace Hospice for their support at the end of his life, for both Donnie and his family.
