Carlos G. Winters, age 87, of Fennimore, WI, passed away on Tuesday evening July 6, 2021 at Orchard Manor in Lancaster, WI. He was born September 24, 1933, on the Winters family farm in Wingville Township, Grant County, WI, the son of George and Mabel (Nauert) Winters. He was the oldest of five children.
Carlos graduated from Montfort High School in 1951 as valedictorian of his class. He graduated from University of Wisconsin-Platteville in 1955. Carlos taught high school in Bangor, WI, until being drafted into the Army in 1958. Basic training was at Fort Leonard Wood, MO; then Carlos was sent to Fort Sill, OK, for artillery training. He was honorably discharged in 1960. Carlos served in the Reserves until 1963. He then returned home to operate the family farm until retiring to Fennimore in 1994. Carlos met the love of his life, Betty Jean Wilcox, at a dance in 1961. They married August 20, 1964, at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Montfort, WI, and they have been married for nearly 57 years.
Carlos served on the Grant County Farm Bureau Board of Directors for 30 years. He also served on the Wingville Township Board as supervisor for many years. He also served on the Iowa-Grant School Board and CESA #3 Board of Control.
Carlos is survived by his wife Betty Jean of Fennimore; four children, Vernon Winters of Sun Prairie, Mark (Jean Salzgeber) Winters of Boscobel, Dean (Beth) Winters of Lodi, and Madonna Goldwasser (Kevin Turner) of Fennimore. He is the proud grandfather of six grandchildren; Andrea, Allison, Ryan, and Rachel Winters, and Ruth and Miriam Goldwasser. He is further survived by his sister, Maxine Moriva of Madison, and two brothers Jerome (Carolyn) Winters of Madison and Roscoe (Evie Schwandt) Winters of Mineral Point.
Carlos was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elaine Timmerman, brother-in-law Donald Moriva, sister-in-law Laronda Winters, and father and mother-in-law LaVern and Ardythe Wilcox.
Carlos was a brain donor for the Wisconsin Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center through U.W. Health. The family thanks the dedicated Orchard Manor staff and Agrace Hospice Care for their excellent and compassionate care for Carlos and family.
Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Monday July 12, 2021, at St. Clement Catholic Church in Lancaster with burial to follow in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church Cemetery in Fennimore with Military Honors. Visitation will be held from 3:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday July 11, 2021, at the Larson Family Funeral Home in Fennimore and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of Mass at the church on Monday morning. In lieu of plants and flowers, a memorial fund is being established in loving memory of Carlos G. Winters.
